BOOK REVIEWS
I have been prescribing testosterone for 5 years and I really believed I had done my homework well. But after reading "Testosterone: A Man's Guide", I realized that I was ignoring very important aspects of using this hormone! Unlike authors of other testosterone books, Nelson's search for health pushed him to try most of the options that he describes, so he provides practical "how-to" information. Aided by his chemical engineering degree and obsession for scientific data, he adds his own personal experience as he demystifies all testosterone myths by reviewing published studies. He also makes it easy for the reader to find a doctor in their area that prescribes testosterone by providing easily searchable directories. For those with no insurance, he shows you how to apply for patient assistance programs and research studies, and to obtain economical gels from compounding pharmacies (an important source that most men and doctors fail to access). To counteract side effects, he shows specific protocols to treat the enlargement of breasts and shrinkage of testicles that some men experience when using testosterone, and how to prevent potential cardiovascular problems caused by testosterone's increase of red blood cells. Unlike other books that claim that testosterone is the main solution to improve erectile strength, Nelson cautions that extra measures sometimes are needed by some men, and he specifies each one of them. He also adds to-the-point information about nutrition, supplements and exercise to maximize the benefits of testosterone. And he uncovers the false claims surrounding supplements believed to increase testosterone naturally. Nelson Vergel, in his new book "Testosterone: A Man's Guide" masterfully educates his readership about testosterone deficiency and what to do about it. I applaud Nelson for tackling a complex topic and providing a nuanced, important and very helpful guide regarding the under recognized syndrome of testosterone deficiency. As a physician who treats testosterone deficient male patients I have found Nelson's book so informatively and clearly written that I have recommended his book to medical colleagues. Importantly, reading this book has further educated me about testosterone. Nelson, points out that testosterone deficiency can cause many problems for men including depression, low energy, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and body shape changes, in addition to loss of interest in sex and impaired sexual prowess. Since most men and even many physicians fail to recognize the meaning of these symptoms testosterone deficiency is often not diagnosed causing many men needless suffering. Finally, it should be pointed out that this book is not inappropriately enthusiastic about testosterone replacement therapy. But rather it very carefully spells out the need for an accurate diagnosis of testosterone deficiency, an analysis of the potential benefits and drawbacks of treatment, and the importance of the proper monitoring of therapy. I hope Nelson's book gains the wide readership it deserves because of its power to improve the health and quality of life of countless individuals. This book is a thoughtful and thoroughly researched guide for any mature man over the age of 35 who's interested in taking control of his health and well being. It dispels many of the myths about testosterone therapy and logically presents the benefits of a medically supervised program. The information is presented in an easy to read and understood format with lots of charts and graphs to help explain how testosterone works in the body. I have recommended this book to much of my circle of friends and family and can't emphasize enough how life changing this book will be to thousands if not millions of men out there.
